If you can't get enough of NBC's Heroes, and wanna take a ride with a new set of folks with thier own brand of superpowers, check out the film released over the weekend - Push. A secret government agency in the US, called Division, has been rounding up folks with various psychic abilities, and using them as weapons.

Hiding out in Hong Kong are psychic refugees Nick and Cassie. Nick Gant is a second-generation "Mover" who is desperate to find his former girlfriend, Kira. Kira is a "Pusher" who has recently escaped Division with synthetic serum that will greatly enhance these psychic powers. Nick meets up with a young "Watcher" named Cassie, whose visions of the future include her own and Nick's death, if they don't find Kira and bring down Division.

By now you are probably wondering what all are these psychic abilities? Here's the breakdown:

  • Movers - This is what you see in the trailers for the film. They can move objects with their minds.
  • Watchers - They can see moments upcoming  in the future. The more powerful they are, the further ahead they can see.
  • Shifters - Can create illusions by shifting light patterns of objects to be something else for a period of time.
  • Sniffs - These folks can track down people or objects.
  • Shadows - Call em counter-sniffs, as they can hide folks or things.
  • Stitchers - The doctors of the psychic world, healing damaged human tissue.
  • Bleeders - These nasties can burst every blood vessel in your body with sonic vibrations.
  • Wipers - They can wipe out a person's memory.
  • Pushers - The granddaddy of em all, as these folks can implant false memories in your mind. Even bend you to do whatever they want you to do.

Unfortunately, Division wants back their stolen properties, and leading the psychic baddies are agents Henry Carver a powerful "Pusher" and Victor Budarin, a "Mover." And if that wasn't bad enough for our young heroes, there is the Hong Kong Psychic Mob with their own set of nasty abilities also after the serum.

  • Nick Gant - Chris Evans (everyone's favorite Human Torch, Johnny Storm from Fantastic Four and Rise of the Silver Surfer, Battle for Terra, Sunshine, and 2007's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
  • Cassie Holmes - Dakota Fanning (Coraline, 2006 version of Charlotte's Web, War of the Worlds, Hide and Seek, The Cat in the Hat, Steven Spielberg Presents Taken, Hansel & Gretel, and is likely to appear in the sequel to Twilight - New Moon, later this year)
  • Kira Hudson - Camilla Belle (10,000 BC, the Quiet, Back to the Secret Garden, Secret of the Andes, Practical Magic, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Poison Ivy 2, A Little Princess)
  • Agent Henry Carver - Djimon Hounsou (Eragon, The Island, Constantine, Alias tv series, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, Gladiator, Deep Rising, and Stargate)
  • Agent Victor Budarin - Neil Jackson (Stargate: Atlantis, Quantum of Solace, The Thirst, played Marcus in Blade: The Series, Stargate SG-1, and Alexander)
"Hook" Waters - Cliff Curtis (10,000 BC, Sunshine, The Fountain, Virus, Deep Rising, Mysterious Island tv series, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Hercules in the Underworld)
  • Teresa Stowe - Maggie Siff (Life on Mars, and not related to the genres but one of my fav new tv shows Tara in Sons of Anarchy)
  • Emily Hu - Ming-Na (2008's Prom Night, Street Fighter, Starquest)
  • Pinky Stein - Nate Mooney (Moonlight tv series, 2008's Charlotte's Web, Vampire Vermont)
  • Agent Mack - Corey Stoll (the Number 23, Alias, Charmed)
  • Agent Holden - Scott Michael Campbell (Journeyman, 1997's Flubber, Project: ALF)
  • Nick's Father - Joel Gretsch (National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Journeyman tv series, The 4400, steven Spielberg Presents Taken, Minority Report, Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction)
  • Young Nick - Colin Ford ( heyyy, I just saw him as young Sam Winchester in Supernatural, Journeyman, In the Name of the King: A dungeon Siege Tale, Smallville and look for him in the upcoming Jack and the Beanstalk)

Most folks are comparing this film to Heroes, obviously, Jumper and even X-Men or the Matrix films. You could also throw in The Covenant to that mix. But, I see this film more in the vein of the classic film - Scanners. Either way you see this film, it has a rich, original storyline worthy enough for it's own comic book in the works.
